Water softeners for dishwashers, washing machines and laundry: whole-house Clack and Fleck softeners that stop the spotting, film, stiff towels and scaled heating elements hard water causes, sized to the home so every appliance gets soft water, not just one. Shipped free, assembled and programmed, 5-year valve and 10-year tank warranty. Spots on glasses? Dingy laundry? Which softener fixes it, and why a built-in dishwasher softener isn't the same thing, below the products.
Every symptom people search for separately has the same cause. White spots and a cloudy film on glasses, a chalky residue in the dishwasher, towels that come out stiff and greying, whites that go dull, detergent that won't lather, and a washing machine or dishwasher heating element coated in scale: that's calcium and magnesium, and the dishwasher and washing machine are where you notice it first because they heat water and let it dry on surfaces. A softener on the main line fixes all of it at once and extends the life of every water-using appliance in the house, from the dishwasher to the water heater to the coffee maker.
| What you see | Cause | What soft water changes |
|---|---|---|
| Spots and cloudy film on glassware; chalky dishwasher interior | Minerals left behind as rinse water evaporates; rinse aid only partly masks it | Glasses dry clear without rinse aid; no etching from mineral deposits |
| Stiff, scratchy towels; greying whites; colours fading | Minerals bind to detergent and lodge in fibres; more detergent makes it worse | Softer fabric, brighter whites, and detergent use typically drops by half |
| Dishwasher or washer runs longer, heats slowly, or fails early | Scale on the heating element and in valves and hoses | Scale stops forming; appliances last years longer |
| Soap scum in the washer drum and on the dishwasher door | Hardness reacting with soap to form curd | Soap rinses clean; no scum |
Many European-made dishwashers (Bosch, Miele, Beko) have a small built-in softener that takes dishwasher salt. It softens the water inside that one appliance only, has to be refilled with salt every few weeks, and does nothing for the washing machine, water heater, showers or fixtures. If you're searching "dishwasher water softener" because glasses come out spotted, check whether your dishwasher has a salt reservoir under the lower rack; if it does, fill it. If it doesn't, or you're also seeing laundry and bathroom symptoms, the fix is a whole-house softener on the main line, which handles every appliance at once and never needs the dishwasher's salt topped up.

Grains per day = hardness (gpg) × people × about 75 gallons. A family of four on 15 gpg water uses about 4,500 grains a day; a 32,000-grain unit regenerates weekly, which is the efficient setting. If the home runs the dishwasher and washer daily, or has a large-capacity washer, step up one size so regeneration doesn't come more often than weekly. Install on the main line after the sediment filter and before the water heater so hot and cold both run soft; put a bypass on the outdoor hose bibs if you'd rather not soften irrigation water.
Will a water softener stop spots on dishes? Yes. Spotting is dissolved mineral left behind as water dries; soft water has almost none, so glasses dry clear with little or no rinse aid.
Does a water softener help with laundry? It's one of the most noticeable changes. Fabrics come out softer and brighter, and you'll use less detergent, because none of it is being spent reacting with hardness.
Is salt-free good enough for appliances? A salt-free conditioner reduces scale on heating elements on city water but doesn't remove hardness, so spotting and stiff laundry mostly remain. For the appliance symptoms on this page, a salt-based softener is the one that works.
Can I soften just the laundry room or kitchen? Not practically; residential softeners install on the main. Softening the whole house also protects the water heater, which is usually the most expensive appliance affected.
How much salt will I use? A properly sized metered softener uses about one 40 lb bag a month for a family of four on moderately hard water.
