Countertop water dispensers and bottleless coolers that need no plumbing beyond a water line or a fill: countertop reverse osmosis, hot-and-cold dispensers and inline countertop filters from Crystal Quest and Waterdrop. Good for apartments, offices, RVs and rentals where an under-sink install isn't an option. Which type is right for you?
Three kinds of product live on this page, and they solve different problems.
| Type | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Countertop bottleless water cooler | Connects to a cold water line, filters (ultrafiltration or reverse osmosis) and dispenses hot and cold water on demand. No jugs to lift or store. | Offices, break rooms, families replacing a jug cooler. See the Crystal Quest TURBO countertop cooler; floor-standing versions are on the TURBO, SHARP and Hybrid pages. |
| Countertop reverse osmosis dispenser | Fill a tank or connect to a line; RO membrane removes dissolved solids, lead, fluoride, PFAS and more. Some models heat and chill. | Renters and anyone who wants RO water without drilling a faucet hole. (The Waterdrop A1 is no longer sold; the Waterdrop G3 series under-sink units are the current alternative.) |
| Inline countertop filter | Diverter valve on your existing faucet sends water through two or three cartridges (sediment, carbon, specialty) sitting on the counter. | Taste and odor improvement at the lowest cost; easy to move. See the Voyager double and Voyager triple. |
If you own your home and have space under the sink, an under-sink reverse osmosis system gives better flow and a dedicated faucet for about the same money. Countertop units win when you can't modify the plumbing, move often, or want hot water at the same tap. Whole-home problems — hardness, iron, bacteria — need a whole house system rather than a countertop unit.
