Water softeners for well water — what's different
Well water isn't just hard; it usually brings iron, manganese, sediment and sometimes low pH along with it, and none of those are things a softener is designed to handle on its own. Every system on this page is a metered (demand-regenerating) softener built on a Clack or Fleck valve we trust on well water, sized from 32,000 to 120,000 grains, shipped free with a 5-year valve and 10-year tank warranty.
Do I need an iron filter first?
A softener will remove clear-water (ferrous) iron along with hardness up to about 5 ppm, provided you oversize the unit for the extra load and use a resin cleaner. Above 5 ppm, or if you have red-water iron, manganese staining or a rotten-egg smell, put an iron filter ahead of the softener — running heavy iron through resin fouls it in months. Sizing a well water softener
Grains needed per day = hardness (gpg) × people × about 75 gallons. Add roughly 4–5 gpg to your hardness number for every 1 ppm of iron the softener will see. Pick the capacity that lets the unit regenerate about once a week — that's the sweet spot for salt efficiency and resin life. Well pumps also vary in flow: for 1″+ plumbing or four or more bathrooms, step up to a 1.25″ valve or a twin-tank system.

What about salt-free conditioners on well water?
They prevent scale but don't remove hardness or iron, and on iron-bearing wells they clog. They're a good fit for city water; on a well, treat the iron first or choose a conventional softener.
